Mid-year career goals review: Setting yourself up for success.

by Cesca Abbott

30th Jul, 2024

Back

The first half of 2024 has certainly flown by for us at Talent Seeker and I’m sure you will have found the same. Now we have reached the summer period (although it’s hard to believe on these cloudy, rainy days!), now is the perfect time to pause and take stock of your career progress. A mid-year review of your career goals is essential for ensuring continuous professional growth that align with both your short-term milestones and long-term ambitions.

In this blog, we’ll cover:
•    The importance of conducting a personal mid-year review.
•    Offer a step-by-step guide to conducting your own review.
•    Provide you with some tips on adjusting your goals and creating a practical action plan to aid the next steps of your career journey.

The importance of reviewing career goals mid-year

Reflection and adjustment
Reflecting on your progress so far this year is a great starting point. It will give you a clear picture of how far you've come and how far you still need to go. This reflection isn't just about patting yourself on the back; it's about understanding what’s gone well so far this year and what hasn't; and then making the necessary adjustments to maximise the next six months.

Staying on track
A mid-year review helps to keep you focused and motivated. By revisiting your goals, you’re reminded of your purpose and aspirations, which can re-energise you for the rest of the year.

Identifying new opportunities
The job market and personal life are always changing. A mid-year review allows you to remain adaptable and responsive to new opportunities that align with your career aspirations. It’s a chance to reassess and make changes, if necessary, ensuring you remain on a path that is both fulfilling and successful. Whether it’s an unexpected job opportunity, a new project, or a chance for skill development, being mindful of these changes can significantly enhance your career path.

Steps by step guide to conducting your personal mid-year review

Step 1: Set aside time - Dedicate time to review and evaluate your progress and plans for your next steps.

Step 2: Review your goals - Take a moment to revisit the goals you established earlier this year. Reflect on the reasons behind setting each goal. Understanding the initial motivation can help determine if the goal is still relevant or requires adjustment. Ask yourself:
•    Why was this goal important to me?
•    Is it still relevant to my career path?
•    Do I need to adjust it based on my current circumstances?

Step 3: Assess your progress - Evaluate what has been achieved and identify areas where you fell short or can improve on. Analyse your performance with these key questions:
•    Have I made measurable progress?
•    What challenges did I face?
•    What strategies can I use to overcome these obstacles going forward?

Step 4: Acknowledge your achievements - Recognize and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Celebrating achievements boosts morale and reinforces the rewards of hard work.

Adjusting your goals
Now that you have dedicated the time to assess, evaluate, and recognize your initial goals, it's time to adapt and establish new goals that are realistic and attainable to sustain your motivation for the remainder of the year.

To prioritize your goals effectively, consider the urgency and significance of each. Use the Eisenhower Matrix to classify tasks into:
•    Urgent and important
•    Important but not urgent
•    Urgent but not important
•    Neither

This tool is valuable for organising your efforts and concentrating on what truly matters. By planning your goals this way, you can streamline your tasks and focus on the areas that will have the most significant impact on your professional journey.

Creating an Action Plan
•    Break down goals into smaller, manageable tasks.
•    Set deadlines to ensure you stay on track and adjust as needed.
•    Have someone to hold you accountable to help support and encourage you as you work towards your goals.
•    Regularly monitor your progress, keeping track of your successes and obstacles to provide you with a clear understanding of your development

Regularly reviewing and modifying your career goals ensures sustained growth and alignment with evolving aspirations. From reflection to action plans, each step is vital for professional success.

Take the initiative to conduct your own mid-year career goals review. This proactive step can significantly impact your professional advancement, helping you to stay on track and reach your goals.
